Pregnancy, weight loss and gain, and simply aging can cause once taut abdominal muscles to protrude. Tummy tuck or Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that helps to flatten and shape the abdomen and waist by removing excess fat and skin and tightening the underlying muscles. Newport Beach surgeon Dr. Savalia often combines a tummy tuck with others such as liposuction for more dramatic results.
Is a tummy tuck right for me?
The best candidates for a tummy tuck procedure are men and women in general good health, who are dissatisfied with loose skin and fat around the abdomen that haven't diminished with diet and exercise. Patients who intend to lose a lot of weight should postpone the surgery, as should women who plan future pregnancies.
What is a mini tummy tuck?
A mini tummy tuck, or partial abdominoplasty, is less invasive than a full tummy tuck. It leaves the navel intact, requires a smaller incision, and can be done on an outpatient basis.
What can I expect during the tummy tuck procedure?
Tummy tuck procedure takes approximately two to five hours and can be performed with general or local anesthesia with a sedative. To perform this procedure, Dr. Savalia makes an incision around the navel and across the lower abdomen. As part of your treatment plan, Dr. Savalia might also use liposuction to remove any excess fat.
What is recovery from a tummy tuck like?
For the first few days following your tummy tuck, your abdomen will probably be swollen. Any subsequent pain and discomfort can usually be controlled by medication. Most patients will be released after surgery to recover at home or at an after-care facility, such as Prive where trained nurses can monitor you the first night. (Prive should be a hyperlink to the "After Care Facility" section)
Dr. Savalia will give you instructions for showering and changing your dressings. Most of the stitches will be under the surface, and dissolve on their own over several weeks. Any surface stitches will be removed in five to seven days. Later, the dressing on your incision may be replaced by a support garment.
Abdominoplasty, whether partial or complete, typically produces excellent results for Dr. Savalia's Orange County patients with weakened abdominal muscles or excess abdominal skin. By maintaining a proper diet combined with regular exercise, patients can expect long lasting results for years.
