Oncoplastic Breast Reconstruction Surgery in Newport Beach

When you are facing breast cancer and your various reconstruction options, you will undoubtedly want to consider which procedures offer the most natural and aesthetically pleasing result.

Dr. Savalia has been specially trained in an advanced surgical procedure called “oncoplastic surgery.” The procedure basically combines oncology surgery and plastic surgery to offer an alternative to traditional mastectomy and lumpectomy. This surgical technique addresses concerns related to treating the cancer and reconstruction of the breast.

Traditional versus onconoplastic reconstruction
With a traditional approach to care following a mastectomy, the patient may receive a prosthetic breast implant. Or they may undergo a procedure that uses a portion of their own abdominal fat and muscle to fashion a replacement breast. With a lumpectomy, more of the breast tissue is preserved, but the post-surgical outcome can be very asymmetrical and sometimes as disfiguring as a complete mastectomy.

Oncoplastic surgery is performed with the end result in mind so that the surgeon can conserve as much breast tissue as possible while also aggressively removing all of the cancerous tissue. Since the cancer removal and reconstruction are done at the same time, many patients only have to undergo follow up surgery for minor cosmetic touches, such as the creation of a nipple. Additionally, compared to a mastectomy, recovering after breast cancer surgery is often less traumatic with a reconstructed breast.

What are the benefits of onconoplastic surgery?
Oncoplastic surgery can give more women the choice of a lumpectomy with immediate reconstruction. Many patients find that the end result is also more natural and aesthetically pleasing.  While not every breast cancer patient is a candidate for onconoplastic surgery, those who are typically find it preferable to a mastectomy or lumpectomy.
