Cosmetic eyelid surgery, also called "blepharoplasty" removes the excess fat and wrinkled, drooping skin of the upper eyelids that can make you look constantly tired or sad. It also eliminates bags under the eyes and tightens the lower eyelid skin. The result is a brighter, more alert, and rested appearance. This can have a positive effect on the way you look and the way you feel about yourself.
Dr. Savalia performs eyelid surgery in a Newport Beach-based surgical facility. Eyelid surgery can be performed on adults of all ages, and for many different reasons. Some people have eyelid surgery as a result of aging, while others have inherited traits that cause them to seek treatment as early as their 20s and 30s.
What can I expect during the eyelid surgery procedure?
Eyelid surgery is often performed under local anesthesia. In some cases, Dr. Savalia may recommend general anesthesia. Your time in surgery may be up to three hours and you can expect to return home the same day. During typical eyelid surgery, fat is removed from the upper and lower eyelids. Excess skin and muscle may also be removed, if necessary.
During the surgery, incisions are made following the natural lines of the eyelids - in the creases of the upper eyelids, and just below the lashes in the lower lids. Through these incisions Dr. Savalia separates the skin from fatty tissue and muscle, removes the excess fat, and in some cases, trims the skin and muscle as well. He then uses very fine sutures to close the incisions.
What is recovery like for eyelid surgery?
Your eyes will by bandaged immediately following surgery and pain killers may be prescribed to ease any discomfort. For the first 48 hours after eyelid surgery, your eyes will be covered with a special ointment to keep the eyes moist and promote healing. Iced eye pads may be used on the eyes to decrease bruising and swelling. In addition, Dr. Savalia will suggest you wear dark glasses for anywhere from one to two weeks following surgery in order to prevent discomfort or irritation from wind and sun exposure.
Dr. Savalia will also suggest that you sleep with your head elevated. You might experience temporary changes in your vision after eyelid surgery such as excessive tears, sensitivity to light and/or blurriness, but these symptoms go away once your eyelids have completely healed. You should expect bruising around the eye area for one to two weeks following surgery.
