If you are troubled by uneven skin tone, blemishes, fine lines and wrinkles, or facial scars, a chemical peel may be right for you.

What types of chemical peels are available?

Newport Beach surgeon, Dr. Savalia uses several types of chemical peels. These chemical peels are available in different strengths and Dr. Savalia will select the appropriate strength and combination of chemical agents based on your condition and goals. Some terms that might be used include light or superficial peel, medium peel, or deep peel.

What can I expect during the chemical peel procedure?

Dr. Savalia performs chemical peels in his Orange County and Newport Beach area office or, if necessary, a surgicenter. Deeper peels require anesthesia, lighter peels often do not. The procedure usually takes about 15 minutes, then one to three weeks of recovery. The number of treatments varies depending on your desired results.

During the procedure, Dr. Savalia will apply the chemical solution to the affected areas of your face. The chemical agents then work to separate and peel the outer surface layers of the skin. During the application, you may experience a cool, warm, or hot sensation that can last for ten minutes or more. This feeling may be accompanied by stinging. Once your skin has healed, fresh new skin cells will be generated revealing a smoother, more radiant complexion. Dr. Savalia may recommend a chemical peel in conjunction with other procedures such as a facelift or forehead lift.

What is recovery like for a chemical peel?

Dr. Savalia will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions, including the avoidance of makeup or sun exposure for up to two weeks. You will need sun block SPF 15 or higher to go outside.

Your reaction to a chemical peel depends upon many factors, including your skin type and the peel strength agreed upon by you and Dr. Savalia. During the first two weeks, the skin may break out or appear sunburned. Lighter peels can produce redness and skin peeling for a few days. Deeper chemical peels can result in blisters, scabs, or skin peeling lasting up to two weeks. You may also experience swelling. In the case of a severe reaction, Dr. Savalia may prescribe ointments, creams, oral steroids, and the use of dressings.

What results can I expect from a chemical peel?

A chemical peel will not only improve the color, freshness and texture of your face, but it also helps to improve skin tone and reduce the visibility of fine wrinkles and superficial discoloration, such as age spots. It may improve blotches and can sometimes improve dark circles under your eyes. Results will vary depending on your skin tone and condition.
