Care of Incisions and Repaired Lacerations following Cosmetic Surgery

Click here for a printable version

Sutures remain in for three to seven days and sometimes longer in certain areas of the body, particularly the extremities. In other areas, absorbable sutures that naturally dissolve may be used, so that no suture removal is necessary. Keep all sutures and incisions clean by washing them gently with your hand using a mild soap (e.g. Neutrogena) and water three times a day. Following each washing, apply an ointment or oil to the injured area, particularly the sutures, again three times a day using Q-tips or cotton swabs. You may use Vaseline, Aquaphor ointment, baby oil, or mineral oil. [Do not apply an oil to any wound covered by tape, otherwise the tape will loosen.] I prefer to leave incisions and sutures open to the air, particularly on the face. However, if you wish, a bandage may be applied over the injuries when you go out in public. A shower may be taken immediately if desired and the hair shampooed, even if sutures are placed in the scalp. However, be sure the force of the water is not directed at the sutures. Baths are to be avoided.

Infections and Injuries from Scars following Plastic Surgery

Infections are unusual but if prominent swelling, redness, tenderness, heat, or pain develops, notify Dr. Savalia.

Injured parts heal well if rested and heal poorly if moved. Make every reasonable effort to move the injured part as little as possible for seven days.

Regarding SCARS:

Whenever the skin is cut, a permanent scar remains, even when repaired by a plastic surgeon. Scars are fine lines at first, then become wider, firm and red, and appear worst at about four to six weeks. They then soften and fade over a period of months. Scars can occasionally be improved by -additional plastic surgery or dermabrasion later on, but this should not be considered until the scar has improved to its maximum on its own, which requires six to twelve months.

Avoiding the Sun

Avoid direct sun exposure on fresh scars for three months. Sunscreen agents are highly recommended and should be applied to exposed scars for the first three to six months.

We carry products that are designed to limit scar formation and the associated redness. If you are interested in using any of these products, please call the office.
